Coastal Engineering Lab

Texas A&M University College of Engineering

Elizabeth Stephen

M.Sc. student, Ocean Engineering. Liz is researching the application of nature-based designs for coastal flood mitigation. Transportation and accessibility are critical for the recreational use of beaches, but also increase the likelihood of flooding in and around these areas since often, vehicle access paths are cut through the dune line. Liz is studying the use of natural processes, like biocementation, and natural-inspired designs to build roads and coastal infrastructure to alleviate these negative effects without reducing public access and use. Her work involves physical model testing in the CEL wave flume to assess the feasibility of biocemented dune drive-overs which are impacted by vehicle load as well as wave and surge forcing.
