M.Sc. student, Ocean Engineering. Aaron uses vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data to quantify the contributions of sediment suspension and transportation by deep-draft vessel propeller wash. Utilizing the amplitude of the backscattered acoustic signal and background water samples he is able to determine suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and sediment flux throughout measured channel profiles. SSC and sediment flux quantities are used to better understand prop wash contributions to sedimentation issues and can be incorporated into sediment transport models for increased accuracy in locations with vessel traffic.
